How to make a Latte Macchiato – classic layered coffee

Latte Macchiato is the best-known layered coffee. With warm milk, espresso and milk foam, three distinct layers are created in a tall glass. At De Koffiebaron, we show you how to make it easily at home.

What you need

  • 1 tall glass
  • 200 ml warm milk
  • 1 espresso or strong coffee
  • Milk foam
  • A spoon to gently pour the espresso

Step-by-step preparation

  1. Pour the warm milk into the glass.
  2. Slowly pour the espresso over the back of a spoon so it settles between the milk and foam.
  3. Finish with a layer of milk foam on top.

Tip from De Koffiebaron: Pour slowly and use a tall glass to keep the layers clearly visible.

Tips from De Koffiebaron

  • Use freshly brewed espresso for the best layer contrast.
  • Lightly froth the milk for a softer foam layer.
  • Add vanilla or caramel syrup to the milk for a sweeter variation.
  • Serve immediately for the best layered effect.
