How is Decaf Coffee Made?

Decaffeinated coffee beans go through careful processing to remove caffeine while preserving flavor. The most common methods are:

  • Water Process (Swiss Water Method): Beans are soaked in water to dissolve caffeine, then dried, keeping their natural aroma intact.
  • Solvent Process: Chemical solvents like ethyl acetate or methylene chloride remove caffeine, followed by thorough washing.
  • CO₂ Process: Supercritical carbon dioxide selectively removes caffeine, which is environmentally friendly and retains full coffee flavor.

How Much Caffeine is Really in Decaf?

Although called decaffeinated, decaf coffee still contains 1–3% of its original caffeine. A 200 ml cup has on average 2–7 mg of caffeine, compared to 80–120 mg in a regular cup. For most coffee lovers, this is negligible.

Taste: Less Flavourful or Just as Good?

Thanks to modern decaffeination methods like the water or CO₂ process, decaf coffee can be rich and full-bodied. Some may notice a subtle difference, but many decaf beans are just as flavorful as regular coffee. The secret lies in top-quality beans and a careful decaffeination process.

Pros and Cons of Decaf Coffee

  • Pros: Ideal for evenings or for caffeine-sensitive individuals. Enjoy full coffee flavor without the stimulating effects of caffeine.
  • Cons: Slightly milder taste for some. Usually a bit more expensive due to the extra decaffeination process.

At De Koffiebaron, our carefully curated selection of decaffeinated coffee beans lets you enjoy a rich, full cup any time of the day.
